Step 1: Choose your terrarium
We sell lots of different shapes and sizes in our stores, you’re bound to find one that will suit your space
Step 2: Cover the bottom of your terrarium with a 1.5 inch layer of small stones or pebbles
The bottom layer of small pebbles will act as drainage for your terrarium
Step 3: Add a very thin layer of activated charcoal, then a layer of potting soil
We recommend adding a thin layer of activated charcoal as this will keep the water fresh and fight off any bacterial growth in your terrarium. Next you need to add enough potting soil so that it’s deep enough for your plants to root into it. We recommend a layer that’s about 2.5 to 3 inches
Step 4: Now it’s the fun part!
Start by planting your largest plant first to build some height within your display. Remove the plant from its container and prune the roots
Then, using our terrarium tools make a hole in the soil large enough to fit the plants’ roots
Next, nestle the plant into the soil and firm up the base of the plant so it feels secure. It’s easiest to work your way from the back to the front of your terrarium
Follow these steps to add your remaining plants
Step 5: Get creative
Add a finishing touch with some stones or pebbles, or a favourite figure like a little mushroom or gnome. Or for a kid’s bedroom maybe a dinosaur or fairy figure
Step 6: Enjoy your indoor garden!
