- Preparation & Usage
Plant onions in any firm, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the planting area several weeks in advance by incorporating some well rotted garden compost to the soil. Avoid planting on freshly manured soil. On particularly wet ground, try growing onion sets in raised beds.
When growing onions from sets, plant them so that the tip of bulb is just protruding through the soil surface. Plant bulbs in rows, leaving a space of around 10cm between each bulb, and 30cm between each row.
In late summer/early autumn, the leaves will begin to die down. This means they are about ready for harvest. Bend the leaves over and a few days later ease the onions out of the soil. A few days later again, lift them clear of the soil and leave on the surface to ripen. When dry, rub off loose skins and roots. Store in a cool, dry, frost-free place in trays.
