Dobbies John Innes Peat Free Seed Sowing Compost is a loam based compost which is a naturally reduced peat mix that provides the optimum environment for seed germination and growth into healthy seedlings.

This compost also features added natural plant extract to enhance seed germination and establishment.

  • How to use:
    - Put on a pair of gloves & crumble compost between your hands to break down any lumps so that it regains its open texture.

    Sowing seeds:
    - Fill a propagator, seed tray or pots evenly with compost & firm so the compost is level
    - Sow the seeds following the instructions on the seed pack
    - Water gently using a watering can with a fine rose
    - Cover the seed tray with propagator lid, glass or clear polythene to create a humid atmosphere
    - Place in a warm spot away from direct sunlight until seeds have germinated
    - Remove propagator lid, glass or polythene & keep moist until seedlings are ready for pricking out

    Taking cuttings:
    - Fill a propagator, seed tray or pot evenly with compost & firm with a tamper
    - Make a sloping cut in the stem of the cutting & remove all bottom leaves
    - Dip the end of the cutting into rooting powder to encourage rooting
    - Make a hole in the compost with a pencil or dibber
    - Place the cutting into the hole & firm compost gently around it
    - Cover the tray with propagator lid, glass or clear polythene to create a humid atmosphere
    - Place in a warm spot away from direct sunlight, until the cuttings have taken

    Handy gardening tips:
    - Store in a dry, frost-free place away from any garden chemicals
    - Not suitable for use with ericaceous (acid loving) plants
    - Reseal the bag after use.

    - Always use this compost in a well-ventilated area, ensuring to avoid breathing in dust.
    - Keep away from children and pets
    - Wear gloves while gardening and wash your hands thoroughly after use.
