Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is an elegant small deciduous tree, with deeply lobed dark purple-red leaves that turn fiery red in autumn and tiny purple flowers in spring. This neat, slow-growing acer has an open habit, and looks dramatic silhouetted next to buildings, as a focal point in a small courtyard, or in a Japanese-style garden.

It needs a sheltered spot, away from strong winds or all-day sunshine. It also looks good in a container. The leaves may be greener if they do not receive sufficient light.

Please note that the images show the plant in its maturity state.

Please note that all our plants come in simple plastic pots unless otherwise stated in the product name. If you wish to pot yours up we do have a wide range of pots to choose from.

  • Acers are a genus of deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, grown for their foliage, which often colours brilliantly in autumn and, in some cases, for their ornamental bark or stems. Small, but often attractive flowers are followed by 2-winged fruits.

Fully to frost hardy. Requires sun or semi-shade and fertile, moist but well drained soil. Many acers produce their best autumn colour on neutral to acid soil. Propagate species by seed as soon as ripe or in autumn; cultivars by various grafting methods in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer. Leaf-eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants.
