Clear fallen leaves
Autumn leaves look pretty as they flutter from trees and gather on the ground, but unfortunately they can suffocate your lawn and starve it of vital nutrients, making autumn lawn care essential at this time of year. To keep your grass in top condition, start raking and gathering those leaves as soon as you can. A pair of leaf grabbers can scoop up large piles of leaves quick and easy. Add the leaves to your compost heap or store in a separate container to create leafmould, which can be used as compost or mulch.
If you’re unable to rake or have a large garden, a leaf blower is a great alternative and gets the job done quick and easy.
Wash patios
Clean away debris such as dead leaves or moss from your patios, pathways and driveways using a pressure washer and patio cleaner. Not only does this make your garden look tidier, but it also makes your outdoors safer during autumn and winter. These debris can freeze and become slippery in cold and wet weather, so make sure you clear them away before they become a hazard.
Deadhead and deweed
Weeding is an important job to do before the frosty weather settles in. Getting rid of your weeds now can stop them becoming a bigger problem in spring. Make sure to pay special attention to areas alongside paving joints and garden edges. You can use a trusty weedkiller, but tackling the job with a trusty pair of gardening gloves will ensure you’re pulling the weeds right out from the roots.
To prevent disease spreading in your plants and keep the appearance of your garden up, snip away dying leaves or flower heads that have finished blooming with a clean pair of secateurs. You can find out everything you need to know about deadheading in our blog. Prune trees and shrubs too to promote healthier growth next year and prevent disease.
Cut grass
Autumn lawn care is essential at this time of year. Once the weather cools down, give your grass one final mow, leaving your grass length slightly longer. Cut the edges of your lawn using an edging tool to give your borders neatly cut lines. This means when the spring comes again, you won’t have to do as much maintenance on your lawn. Check out our full autumn lawn care guide to make sure your grass is properly looked after over the colder months.
