You'll need:
- Two large, clean containers (like ice cream pots) with lids
- Paint in a variety of colours (including green and brown)
- Glue or tape
- Stickers, scrap paper, or labels (optional)
- Scissors
- Newspaper or an old sheet (to protect your table)
Let's get started!
1. Get your tubs ready
Wash and dry your ice-cream tubs so they’re clean. Remember to save the lids as you’ll want to decorate and use those too.
2. Pick your teams
Choose one tub to be Team Green and the other to be Team Brown.
• Team Green is for collecting “green” waste. This is soft, fresh scraps like fruit peels and veggie ends. It can also include fresh plant or grass cuttings.
• Team Brown is for dry items like leaves, cardboard pieces, and paper.
3. Time to decorate!
Paint your Team Green tub using green paint. After it dries, you can add extra details like drawings of apple cores, carrot ends, or grass cuttings. Paint your Team Brown tub in warm browns or oranges. After it dries, add drawings of leaves, twigs, or cardboard tubes. Make them as fun, colourful, and creative as you like!
4. Add labels
Add “TEAM GREEN” on one lid and “TEAM BROWN” on the other. You can draw your own signs, use stickers, or stick on labels
5. Start collecting scraps
Now your scrap-sorting tubs are ready! Keep them in your kitchen or somewhere handy so you can easily pop your scraps inside.
• Put all your green waste into your Team Green tub.
• Put all your brown waste into your Team Brown tub.
When the tubs fill up, you can empty them into your compost heap and
continue collecting!
Here’s a handy list of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ waste items:
Team Green (fresh and soft):
• Fruit and veggie scraps (like carrot peels, banana peels, apple cores)
• Coffee grounds
• Tea bags (plastic-free)
• Grass cuttings
• Fresh plant trimmings
Team Brown (dry and crunchy):
• Dry leaves
• Twigs
• Shredded paper
• Cardboard pieces
• Straw or hay
