The best choice depends on your travel style. Compact gas BBQs are incredibly popular for camping as they light instantly and don't produce messy ash, which is ideal for "leave no trace" sites. While our BBQs are perfect for travel, you should always check local byelaws and safety signage first. Many parks and beaches have specific rules about outdoor cooking. If you are permitted to grill, ensure you place the BBQ on a flat, stable surface away from dry grass or marram grass, and never leave it unattended until the unit is completely cold.
Most portable gas models use small, disposable gas canisters (such as the EN417 threaded cartridges) rather than the large heavy bottles used for patio grills. These are lightweight and screw directly into the regulator, making them much easier to carry. Some models can also be adapted to run off a standard refillable cylinder using a separate hose and regulator kit if you are staying in one spot for longer.
Yes, they are designed with convenience in mind. Many features porcelain-enamelled grates that can be wiped down easily, and some even have dishwasher-safe components. We recommend giving the grates a quick scrub while they are still warm and emptying any ash or grease traps once cooled before you pack the BBQ back into your vehicle to keep things tidy.
Despite their small footprint, most portable BBQs can comfortably cater for 2 to 4 people. You’ll usually have enough room for about 6 burgers or a pack of sausages at once. If you're cooking for a larger group, look for "expandable" portable models or simply cook in batches - the fast heat-up times mean your guests won't be waiting long for the next round!
Safety is key when moving a portable unit. Always ensure the charcoal is completely extinguished and cold, or the gas canister is disconnected, before packing away.
